What Is a Swim Spa?
How a swim spa differs from a hot tub, a swimming pool, and an endless pool — and who a swim spa is really for.

›On this page
A swim spa is a compact, self-contained pool that creates a continuous current of water for you to swim against. Instead of pushing off a wall and turning every few strokes, you swim in place — like a treadmill for swimming. Most swim spas also include a warm-water seating area with massage jets, so a single unit can serve as both an exercise pool and a relaxation spa.
That dual nature is the whole idea. A swim spa sits between three things you may already know: a hot tub, a swimming pool, and a dedicated "endless" exercise pool. Understanding where it overlaps with each — and where it doesn't — is the fastest way to decide whether it's right for you.
How it differs from a hot tub
A hot tub is built purely for soaking and hydrotherapy. It's smaller, cheaper, and simpler to install and run. A swim spa does everything a hot tub does, then adds the ability to swim, exercise, and do aquatic therapy — at a higher price, a larger footprint, and higher running costs. If you only want to relax in warm water, a hot tub is the simpler, less expensive choice.
How it differs from a swimming pool
A traditional pool gives you open water to swim laps, play, and cool off, but it's a major construction project, takes a large yard, is usually seasonal in cold climates, and can't double as a hot tub. A swim spa fits on a patio or deck, works all four seasons, heats to spa temperatures, and is dramatically cheaper to install — but you swim in place rather than across open water.
How it differs from an endless pool
Endless-style exercise pools are also built around a current, but they're typically larger, often custom-installed, and focused on the swim experience rather than on doubling as a hot tub. A swim spa is the more turnkey, multi-purpose version of the same idea.
The one-sentence definition
A swim spa is a portable, year-round pool with an adjustable current for swimming and exercise — usually paired with a heated, jetted spa — that installs above ground in a fraction of the space and cost of a traditional pool.
Who a swim spa is really for
Swim spas tend to make the most sense for people who want fitness plus relaxation without the commitment of a full pool. That includes lap swimmers in small yards, families wanting year-round water time, and anyone using water for low-impact exercise, therapy, or rehab. If your only goal is to soak, you'll likely be happier — and several thousand dollars richer — with a hot tub.
Next up: the different types of swim spas, so you can match a configuration to how you'll actually use it.
