Questions to Ask & Red Flags
A printable list of questions for any dealer, plus the marketing hype and red flags to watch for.

You've made it through the guide. This final chapter is your field kit: a printable set of questions to bring to any dealer, and the red flags and marketing hype to watch for. Walk in with these and you'll be the most prepared person in the showroom — which is exactly where you want to be on a five-figure purchase.
Questions to ask any dealer
The swim experience
- Can I test-swim this model at the speed and length I'll actually use?
- What type of current is this — jets, propeller, or paddlewheel — and how is it adjusted?
- How wide, deep, and smooth is the flow? Is it easy to hold position?
Build and quality
- What's behind the acrylic, and how is the floor supported?
- What's the frame made of, and how is it protected from rot or corrosion?
- Is the base fully sealed, and are cabinet panels removable for service?
Efficiency and running cost
- How is it insulated, and what does it realistically cost to run in my climate at my temperature?
- What heater does it use, and is a heat pump option available?
Equipment and service
- How many pumps, and is there a dedicated circulation pump?
- Are pumps, jets, and parts standard or proprietary? Where do I get parts in five years?
The deal
- What's the all-in installed price — pad, electrical, delivery, and any craning?
- May I have the written warranty to read, including the labor terms and exclusions?
- Who performs warranty service locally, and how long have you been in business?

Bring these questions on paper or your phone. A prepared buyer asking specific questions gets more honest, more complete answers — and signals that hype won't work.
Red flags and marketing hype
- Horsepower worship. Big pump numbers used as proof of a great swim. The feel of the current is what counts, not the spec.
- Jet-count bragging. "60 jets!" means little if they're weak. Placement and power beat quantity.
- "Chemical-free" claims. No system eliminates water care — salt, ozone, and UV reduce it, not erase it.
- "Lifetime warranty" with no detail. Ask what's actually lifetime, and what labor costs you. See warranties.
- Pressure and expiring discounts. "Today only" urgency is a sales tactic, not a reason to skip your due diligence.
- Reluctance to show the warranty or quote an all-in installed price. Evasiveness on the basics is a meaningful warning.
- No path to test-swim and no service answer. If they can't show you the swim or tell you who fixes it later, be cautious.
The meta-lesson
The best defense against hype is the education you now have. You know the current matters most, that structure and insulation beat finishes, and that the written warranty and all-in price tell the real story. Read common buying mistakes for a few more, and buy with confidence.
That's the guide. From here, dig into the in-depth articles on any topic, or browse brand comparisons when you're ready to shortlist.
